Is Your Filter Plumbed Backwards?

For a Cartridge filter to function properly the unit must be installed properly. The waterlines that attach to the filter must be in the correct locations – inlet = water going into the filter, outlet = water leaving the filter and going back to the pool. Refer to the Owner’s Manual provided by the filter manufacturer to verify proper line placement.

If the cartridge filter is plumbed backwards the water will flow through the filter element from the “inside-out” rather than from the “outside-in” as the filter was intended. Dirt and debris will accumulate on the inside of the pleats causing water flow to be restricted and the cartridge will begin to expand. Eventually, the cartridge’s end caps will split, releasing internal pressure. The filter element is now being by-passed in the filtration. This damage can happen rather quickly or it may take some time depending on the water flow, amount of filtration time, size of filter, etc.

You can inspect your filter cartridge to see signs of the filter being plumbed backwards.

The following are evidences of backward plumbing:

    1. The end cap/s is/are split or damaged
    2. There is dirt accumulation on the inside of the pleats
    3. The support bands on the outside of the cartridge are stretched or wrinkled

    4. The outside of the pleats are rounded or puffy due to inside pressures

If you see any of these issues, you may need to replumb your filter so it is correct.

To verify whether or not the filter is plumbed correctly first look on the outside of the filter and confirm which pipe is marked “inlet”(if it is not clearly marked check the Owner’s Manual provided by the manufacturer), remove the top of the filter and the filter cartridge element. Cautiously and quickly turn your pump on and off observing through which pipe the water enters the filter. If the water is entering the filter through the inlet pipe then it is plumbed properly. If the water enters the filter through the pipe marked “outlet” then the filter is plumbed backwards and needs to be re-plumbed correctly.

No warranties shall apply for improperly plumbed systems.
